Welcome to my website!

I wish you an enjoyable visit and hope to welcome you in the audience soon!

Violinist Cordelia Hagmann, originally from Switzerland, is a versatile musician who has been heard in many different venues in the USA, Europe, Israel and Asia from the main stage of Carnegie Hall, Barbican Centre in London, Salle Pleyel in Paris, Konzerthaus in Vienna, Konserthus in Stockholm, the Tonhalle Zürich, Swiss embassy in Washington DC, CAL performances in Berkeley, Jerusalem Music Center to the Live 8 concert (2005) in Philadelphia. A classically trained violinist who has appeared as a soloist, chamber musician, recitalist or concert mistress, she is now frequently performing with Meitar Ensemble, as concert mistress and soloist with the Tel Aviv Soloists and is the violinist of Jazz bassist Avishai Cohen's Strings Project.

Cordelia lived in NYC from 2004 till 2011. She was a core member and concert mistress of SONYC (String Orchestra of New York City), toured with the Brooklyn-based Mark Morris Dance Company and performed in leading positions with the New England Symphonic Ensemble regularly in Carnegie Hall.

Early on in her stay in NYC Cordelia discovered her passion for Flamenco and subsequently started dancing. She has been heard playing and seen dancing both in the same piece written by her husband Jonathan Keren, who is one of today's leading young Israeli composers.

Since moving to Tel Aviv with her family in the summer of 2011, Cordelia has been performing with the Israel Philharmonic, Meitar Ensemble, Tel Aviv Soloists, Israeli Opera Tel Aviv, Israel Contemporary Players, Musica Nova, Bach Soloists, Jazz bassist Avishai Cohen and with Barbra Sreisand. She has also been active as a chamber musician and as a soloist.

Cordelia began playing the violin at age five with Matthias Steiner in Switzerland. She received her Bachelor of music with honors from the conservatory in Winterthur-Zürich where she studied with Nora Chastain and in 2002 she moved to the USA where she completed her studies in the renowned class of Miriam Fried with a Performer Diploma at Indiana University in Bloomington. While in Indiana Cordelia was a member of the Moirae Piano Trio under the guidance of Menahem Pressler. With the Trio she performed, among other works, Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with orchestra and won a top prize and the audience prize at the Chesapeake Chamber Music Competition in 2004. Cordelia also won the Kiwanis Prize in Zürich in 2001, the concerto competition in Winterthur in 1998 and other prestigious scholarships in her native Switzerland. Cordelia participated in summercourses such as the international Holland Music sessions and the Pablo Casals Festival in Prades/France where she played for Herman Krebbers and Franco Gulli among others.

Cordelia can be heard on Avishai Cohen's cd “Almah”, has been seen on ARTE TV and Radio broadcasts and interviews have included the Swiss National Radio, Israel's Kol Ha Musika and music stations in New York City and Germany.

Education

Teaching and outreach education have been a very satisfying experience to me since I was sixteen years old.
Currently I teach violin at Opus 118, Harlem School of Music and Lucy Moses School (both in NYC), chamber music for New York Youth and I also teach some private students.
Students of mine have entered conservatories and won national youth competitions.

With the FAD Quartet (Cordelia Hagmann and Emily Popham, violins, Christopher Jenkins, viola, and John Popham, cello) we have played numerous concerts at the High School of Arts and Design in New York City, introducing classical music to kids who have not been exposed to it, through demonstrating the different musical eras (baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary), making connections between music and the fine arts, introducing our instruments, and discussing general musical ideas.

Working for Opus 118 in Harlem has especially been a very interesting experience since I first started teaching there in 2004. I love the fact that at Opus 118 musical education doesn’t depend on individual financial background. Opus 118 provides many students with financial aid, which makes it possible for any child who wants to learn an instrument to get instruction! To me, guiding a child into the world of music and violin playing is very fulfilling. Personally, I have only benefited from the interaction with many people from different backgrounds, and I know now that musical education cannot be taken for granted- so much of it depends on the surroundings we grow up with, and I am happy to fight this situation with the work I do for Opus 118!
